TAYLA HARRIS KICKS LIKE A GIRL WHO KICKS LIKE A MAN WHO KICKS LIKE AN ELITE SPORTSPERSON WHO KICKS LIKE TAYLA HARRIS
Growing up watching the male AFL, I always wanted to kick like Darren Jarman. I picked out and admired his particular individual skill. My love for the game grew on the backs of individuals showing elite athleticism and superior skills.
I wanted to mark like Tony Modra. I wanted the speed and agility of Andrew McLeod. I wanted the poise and the pinpoint disposal of Darren Jarman. I wanted the toughness of Mark Ricciuto.
I never said, however, ‘I want to kick like a boy!’ because a lot of boys I grew up with were terrible fucking kicks.
Tayla Harris is really good at kicking a football.
She is good outside of the context of gender and sex.
The commenters who posted sexualised comments on the photo of Harris were revolting, and those that tried to talk down her ability because of her gender were wrong. Let’s all agree their comments weren’t acceptable and, if we can’t change their minds (and I think that might be a struggle), ignore them. Delete them. Don't let them come back.
Don’t ironically say ‘I wish I could kick like a girl!’ in her support, though I’m positive it’s meant with the best intentions. Let’s never say that phrase again. Let’s ignore it. Delete it. Don't let it come back.
Say you want to kick like Tayla Harris. Or you want the leadership and physical strength of Erin Phillips. Or you want the positional awareness and agility of Daisy Pearce.
Don’t let the next generation see Tayla Harris as a good player for a woman. I didn’t see Darren Jarman as a good player for a man. I knew him by his name as a hero.
That being said, if I kicked like Tayla Harris my hamstring would end up in the next postcode.
