Sportsbet, the Australian online betting company, have announced that they will be paying out on Port Adelaide as the 2017 AFL premiers after only two rounds of the season.
The shock decision was announced via a post appearing on the company’s Facebook page early this morning from spokesperson Li Doff confirming that, following on from a tradition of settling ‘foregone conclusions’ early, all outright bets on the Power to win the 2017 AFL Premiership would be paid as winning bets.
“With 20 games to be played it’s abundantly clear that Ken Hinkley’s team will be too strong for the rest of the competition,” said Doff.
“The Power supporters on this (Facebook) page have been vocal in their certainty that this is Port Adelaide’s year, and we believe them. Having beaten Sydney at the SCG in the opening round, and dominating Fremantle’s AusKick team last weekend, we looked through the remaining fixture and couldn’t see a single game that they would drop on this current form.
“After consulting with statisticians they have confirmed that if Port Adelaide win every remaining game, it is with 100% mathematical certainty that they will win the flag.”
Mr. Doff went on to detail some of the windfalls that betmakers would be collecting early.
“It’s a huge day for the 17 punters that backed them in at 151/1. One happy chappy even put $3 on them, so he’s really reaping the rewards today.”
This is not the first time that Sportsbet have paid out early on AFL betting. Last year Sportsbet paid out on Patrick Dangerfield to win the Brownlow medal before the completion of the regular season. In 2015 they paid out on Hawthorn’s third premiership in succession before they defeated West Coast in the Grand Final and in 2011 they paid out on the Gold Coast Suns to finish on the bottom of the ladder, also after two rounds.
“We’ve very rarely got the early payout wrong,” said Mr. Doff, speaking to ASW via telephone.
“In fact, the number of correct results we’ve predicted over the years has even attracted some accusations of match-fixing!” chuckled Doff, before a whispered voice was heard in the background and the subject was changed.
Fans of Port Adelaide were quick to voice their pleasure on Facebook.
“It’s been clear to us from the very first bounce that 2017 was our year! How good is Sam Powell-Pepper? I call him ‘Salt’ when he gets the ball. Like salt and pepper! We’ve all got good senses of humour here at Alberton!” wrote one supporter.
“We’ll never stop, stop, stop until we’re top, top, top!” wrote another, quoting the Port Adelaide club song and its confusing message concerning the continuation of effort after reaching first place on the ladder.
Port Adelaide have announced that they will be performing a lap of honour in celebration 30 minutes before their ‘Showdown’ clash against the Adelaide Crows this weekend.
